Combinations of Lycra and other synthetic materials replaced nylon sheeting in modern wetsuits. The Way They Work

This layer of warm water then acts as a thermal suit by keeping the cold water from getting to the skin. Wetsuits are actually designed to let water come into contact with the skin, unlike the dry suits which are sealed to keep water out. When temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees, the average dive temperature, wetsuits are preferably used because there are hardly any intense temperatures for the body to be protected from. Dry suits are used for low exceedingly low temperatures to protect the body from potential freezing.

Wet Suit Types

Besides the well-known full suit, there are many other different types of wetsuits. One particular wetsuit, "Shorty" suits, have full torsos but dont cover the entire arm and leg areas. These are good for warm water conditions because its main purpose is for maintaining body heat at great depths. Another suit, the "Farmer John" style, which has a thickened pants layer that goes up around the shoulder but does not cover the arms. These suits do more than just temperature control as they offer streamlining and abrasion protection.

The Hoods

Since over 25% of body heat is lost through the head, hoods are a very important accessory to a full wetsuit. Hoods are often made of similar materials to a wetsuit, but are somewhat thicker to prevent loss of heat around such a sensitive area. Most hoods have long "bibs" that tuck within the neck of the wet suit to protect against a gush of cold water down the neck.

Booties

While some wetsuits have integrated "feet", most use separate "booties" that are drawn up over the legs of the wetsuit. Booties are usually corrugated and reinforced to allow divers to stand or push off against the bottom or rough surfaces.

The Gloves

Another important addition is the Gloves. They must not only protect against cold water but must also stop sharp coral and rocks from damaging the skin. Diving gloves also have textured fingertips to help in handling gear or other objects during a dive.

Today the trend is to make gardens and the open spaces between blocks of apartment houses an extension of man's living space. Vegetables and fruit trees are being replaced in large part by terraces, lawns, pools and ornamental shrubs. Because gardens and the open spaces between apartment blocks are far smaller than public parks, smaller trees and above all shrubs are being widely used.

The finest and most abundant display of flowers are borne by shrubs that have ample young wood. Shrubs left untended rejuvenate themselves by throwing out new shoots from the base and it is therefore necessary to aid them in this process. Pruning should not be left until too late so as to prevent the need of removing wood that is very old, for the shortening of strong thick branches mars the shrub's overall appearance.

A further rule of pruning is that one should maintain the natural habit and shape of the shrub as much as possible. Only in the case of neglected shrubs or ones with asymmetric growth are the branches cut back hard, i.e. all the branches are cut back to 10 cm above the ground. As a rule it then takes two to three years for the shrubs to attain a reasonable size to bear flowers. With tended shrubs old branches are removed regularly every two to three years.

Slit or notch grafting is used when the diameter of the stock is several times greater than that of the graft. With this method a wedge-shaped incision is made in the stock and the scion, cut at an angle corresponding with that of the wedge-shaped incision, is fitted into the stock. It is also possible to merely make a straight cut in the stock and spread the tips apart to receive the scion.

However as the varieties in these classes vary so much in their natural sizes, that is many varieties only just exceed the lower limit of 6 in., whereas a number of others produce blooms only just a little under the top limit of 8 in., this variation must also be taken into account when de-branching, restricting the smaller growing varieties rather more severely.

Small decorative and cactus will require little de-branching, unless the plants produce an unduly high number, when it is advisable to thin out the weaker shoots. Again variety and soil considerable bearing on this point, a weak growing variety on light soil for instance should be restricted to no more than eight or nine side branches. Treat miniature varieties similarly.

This practice is a common one in the more northerly counties. In addition to stopping the plant to induce early flowering it is usual, particularly when grown for exhibition, to restrict the number of branches that each will bear in order that perfection of bloom may be achieved.

The medium and small pompons should be accorded similar treatment to that given to the small decorative and cactus, that is only the weak growths are removed when grown on rich soils, reducing a little more severely on poor soil. The small pompons require very little thinning unless the soil is particularly poor.

Once the plants are growing strongly they may be moved closer to the glass for a few more days, and after this should be ready to go out into the cold frames for hardening off. But do be certain that the roots have taken a very strong hold before attempting to put them into the less congenial atmosphere of the cold frame.

It is far better to retain them in the house if there is any doubt, particularly in the more exposed areas and in the north. Usually the first plants are ready to go out, in the south at least, about mid April, somewhat later in the north and in Scotland.

The important thing to remember is that the leafy growths are not produced from either the tuber or the old stem, but from the fleshy extensions of the stem, intermediate between stem and tuber, which is known as the "crown".

This crown is easily broken away from the tuber if carelessly divided, and it would be useless to plant any tuber which has no crown, as this would produce roots only without any top growth. In a few varieties, particularly cactus varieties with clusters of comparatively thin individual tubers, the crown is very small and very closely knit to the tubers. These types are very easily divided, in fact it is possible to pull them to pieces and each piece will make a good plant. Unfortunately this is not true of the majority of varieties, some decorative varieties producing almost ball like tubers of comparatively small size, merging imperceptibly in crown and then into stem. In this case it is inadvisable to divide into more than two.

One, bring extra clothes. Especially if there's a chance of raining. You don't have to lug it around, you could even just leave it in the car. Going home drenched and wet, is a bad idea, hence the extra clothes. The same could work for a hot day too. No one wants to go home inside the car, smelling all rancid and moist. Even an extra shirt would suffice in protecting your back from the sudden cold.

Two, avoid wearing gaudy accessories. They might get snatched, stolen or lost; especially in a heavy crowd. That goes without saying that you should wear comfortable clothes. And bring a hat too. Especially if it's sweltering.

Three, have an itinerary. Plan your movements out and know when and where to meet. Should any of you lose each other, set out a meeting point in order to collect anyone who went missing.

Lastly, exercise common sense. Common sense isn't really common nowadays, so help yourself, by keeping yourself safe and enjoying the experience all at the same time.

Somehow, that particular Ripley's episode brings me some sort of deja vu. I had seen this place where you have to eat the whole thing in under one hour or you pay for it. The steak I mean.

Well, look no further than the Big Texan, a not-so-trendy and Western restaurant off in Amarillo, Texas. Just like me, we know it exists; we just somehow forget the name or where it's found. Well, try and memorize, Big Texan, Amarillo.

The restaurant is a Texan icon which is hard to miss. It's a highly prolific place, often frequented by meat lovers from different places. But this restaurant is often missed, often taken in as a legend. After all, the offer of a free meal if you finish it in under an hour is highly unlikely.

Stuffed animals litter the walls, with people eating their usual fares. A shooting gallery, a gift shop, and a photo-op outside. Looks highly normal for a western-style restaurant until you see the stage. A raised platform with a table, some salt shakers and nothing more.

Up for a grueling and delicious challenge? You eat a 72 ounce steak in under an hour. Along with the trimmings, a salad, a potato and a bread roll. You get what you need to drink, but you have to finish it all in one hour. Finish it, and you get into the roster of the four thousand six hundred who had successfully finished the quest. Fail and you lose fifty dollars, along with the twenty seven thousand who have tried.

Do they even think about profit? Well, if you consider the figures above, it seems like they gain more than when they lose for the free meals. And let me tell you, a big slab of meat ain't no joke. You have to be very hungry to finish the entire thing. Good luck if you take the challenge up.

But book fairs, in my nerdy sort of way, are awesome. It's a library fest. Well, okay, that sounded not much fun. It's basically just like a bookstore. Except there's not much of the elevator music they keep playing in the background, you hear more noise because the fair is either outside or inside the mall, and you get to read standing up, instead of lounging around in the bookstore's reading area.

The redeeming thing about Book Fairs is value. Yes, you get to find a book not available in any bookstore. That book could well have been the last of its kind, the surviving copy of a disallowed, or the diary of a legendary person. One would never comprehend the sensation unless one experiences it.

Those books could be from a personal collection, an antique, even something personal. I've seen my share of hand-bound, leather-covered books in a modern book fare and the feeling one gets is like finding Captain Whatsisname's treasure chest. Never mind if the book talks nothing but farming or some boring stuff, but the important thing is rarity. (I once found a book on necromancy, but let's not go into that.)

You could resell it in the next year's fair for an even heftier sum, or start your own personal collection of rare classics. Who knows, in a year's time, you might be the proud owner of the literati's Holy Grail. Now that would count for something, wouldn't it?

The greatest obstacle to obtaining seed from the intensely double giant decorative varieties is the length of time taken for the bloom to develop to the fertile stage, and the absence of long periods of sun. In this country, which has comparatively short, cool and damp seasons, it is not uncommon to find it impossible to obtain seeds from such varieties.

Seed can also be obtained from the ray florets, provided that these have perfectly formed female organs, as pollen can be transferred from other dahlias to fertilise the stigma. Unfortunately in many cases, even though the ray florets hear fertile organs, the florets fall out before the seed has begun to form.

10,000 B.C.: This movie sends us back to prehistoric times. When a warlike tribe attack the Yaghai's, they kidnap the beautiful Evolet. D'Leh, a young hunter who is in love with her, organizes a band of hunters to chase down these warmongers, and rescue Evolet and the others.

WANTED: A young, bored, office worker named Wesley discovers that his father, who he never really knew, is a professional killer. When his father is killed, Wesley is basically forced into the group of assasins that his dead father was involved with. He now will become the professional killer that is in his blood. After that, everything becomes very complex and twisted. Enjoy the ride.

THE CHRONICALS OF NARNIA, PRINCE CASPIAN: It is one year later, in their normal lives when, the four saviors of Narnia, Lucy, Susan, Peter, and Edmund are teleported back to Narnia. Prince Caspian has blownn Susan's magic horn, hoping to be saved. 100's of years have passed since they left Narnia, but they now return to save Narnia from the evil Telmarines. With the support of the the bravest in the forrest, including, a dwarf, the centaurs, and a very skilled mouse, they will fight for the future of Narnia.

Jumper: While almost drowning, David realizes he has an unbelievable ability. He has the ability to teleport himself anywhere, anytime. He then comes to learn that there are others with this skill. After years of "jumping" around the planet, he is exposed to hunters that think jumpers are a threat, and need to be eliminated. He now must battle for his life, as the hunters try to track him down.

WALL-E: This picture is an animation comedy. Mankind has left Earth, since it had become a pile of rubbish. Wall-E, a robot built to remove trash, has been left behind to clean up the planet. When Eve, another robot, arrives looking for signs of life on Earth, Wall-E is finally not alone. Eventually, when Eve is recovered by the craft that sent her, Wall-E stows away, and starts an incredible adventure.

BOLT: Bolt is a fun animation. Bolt, is a dog who is an actor, who in his role on television, has superpowers. His problem is that he honestly believes he has these powers. When he is accidently finds himself in a real world situation, he realizes that he is just a dog. On a journey to get back home, he is aided by Rhino and Mittens, his newly found hampster and cat friends.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: I guess it was a typical night out in Vegas. Barely remembering what had happened, Jack and Joy wake up and soon realize that they had married each other the night before. They wind up winning a large jackpot at the slot machines, but each thinks they deserve the prize, so they try to settle it in court. It is decided that they must stay together for six months, and give their marriage a chance. With $3 million on the line, the battle is on as both want to have the cash for themselves.

TWENTY ONE: This movie tells the actual tale of young college kids who created a winning formula to beat blackjack. This team of blackjack players planned, trained, and executed a brilliant run at the blackjack tables. To be successfull in Las Vegas, where players who beat the game can be banned from playing, they had to change casinos often, and disguise themselves, so the wouldn't get caught. Twenty One is based on the book that tells how the M.I.T. teams made millions playing blackjack.

THE DARK KNIGHT: Batman, along with Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. This has effectively reduced crime, but now a new super criminal arrives on the scene, and attacks the city. Batman is in a battle now, as criminal mastermind, the Joker, has released his criminal insanity on Gotham City.

Many people will buy these movies, and watch them at home. A more recent method for getting films is through downloads from online sources. The internet has many websites that will download virtually any movie ever made.

I would always make arrangements ahead of time for a pickup and only carry on my luggage. Also if you do take a cab know how to save on it. If you do want to rent a car you need to know how to save on that also.

I say when you book your flight, book your airport transportation as well. There are no hotels that I am aware of in Las Vegas that offer a shuttle from the airport. You can, however, pick up a shuttle for less than $15 per person for a round trip. You need to prearrange this before you leave. This is the best way to get from the airport to your hotel. Busses and cabs are available, but the prices will be more than the shuttle.

I tell everyone that asks to pack as light as possible. You should only take a carry on. During peak times it can literally take ages to get your luggage if you check bags. You will also pay the airline for any checked baggage. If you just carry it on with you, not only do you save money, you save a lot of time.

If for some reason you do decide that you are just going to take a cab, tell your driver not to take the tunnel. You really have to choose here between time and money. If they do not take the tunnel you are going to pay less, but if traffic is heavy you are going to be slowed down. When they do take the tunnel they will charge you more. The decision is what is more important, time or money.

If you decide to rent a car, Fox Rent-a-Cars is the best way to go. They are not on the grounds of the airport, but they will shuttle you to their location. You can save a lot of money doing this over renting at the airport. I strongly suggest you do not rent a car though, it is a lot easier to get around Vegas with public transportation. You dont have to worry about parking, etc. Plus everything is so close together that it really is a waste to drive.

When ever you are landing in Vegas make sure you have a plan how you are getting from the airport to your hotel. Planning in advance can save you some money. The best way is to arrange for a shuttle and don't check bags, this will save time and money.

Snow Festival

Ok, I was intrigued as to why we had a "Snow" festival when the thing was but a common sight when it was winter. Shouldn't we have a rain festival then or something along those lines?

This year, they had settled to celebrating snow. That minuscule, white ice crystal. I don't think the town had gone bonkers yet, but seeing this was the first time, I indulged myself to the little celebration. It was a snowy town to begin with, so I had it would be quite natural for us to celebrate something we had plenty of.

The festival had no name yet, except for the fact that it was indeed, cold-themed. The townsmen were were quite excited frankly, even though I assumed that they would be just freezing their you-know-whats off after the festival. They had everything planned quite well though.

In the first day, they were going with just the usual calm day of displaying stuff and being off with their business. They were off in their booths selling either food (the winter rice cake was a treat to the tongue, the wine was something of another matter). There were makeshift igloos too, and a warm fire inside; it was kind of daunting to be inside, but when you've been there, you would know it's actually quite comfy.

The second day marked off a town snowball fight. It was very, very invigorating to say the least. They had, like, people do stuff you would only find in military games. They had the melee people who crept up another and slid snow down their pants (not a very good thing mind you), the snipers who propelled balls a few feet away, and the support, who made the snowballs for everyone.

The last day had the big bonfire. Everyone was warm and fine, and everyone felt content. I had felt that it wasn't the snow that made everyone happy, but just because everyone was there.

It was more of a celebration of life than of the snow.

Everyone dreams of traveling but most people don't do it. Fear keeps most people from traveling. When I first went away in 2006, people always wished they could do what I was doing. For some people it is easy to just jump ship and travel. We have it in us all along and we just need a gentle nudge. For me, all it took was a trip to Thailand and jealousy before I was quitting my job and telling my friends I was going to travel. For others it is a lot harder. They are more tied down, more afraid, more uncertain. They want to do it but, instead the nudge I needed, they need a full on push.

Looking for reasons? Well here are some good reasons why you should travel the world and why now is the best time:

There's a recession. With the world economy in a tailspin and companies slashing jobs, there is a lot of economic uncertainty in the world. Avoid it all. Go travel. If you quit your job, sell your stuff and travel, you won't have to worry about it. In fact, prices are dropping as the tourist industry tries harder to get people to go overseas. Come back when the economy is better. Let others worry while you go out and have fun.

You meet a lot of people. There is not a day that doesn't go by where you don't meet people from all over the world doing the same thing you are. You'll meet locals who will take you around and open their homes and city to you. What more can you ask for in life than meeting wonderful people and creating a network of friends that encompasses the globe.

It is better than being behind a desk. Working sucks. Sitting behind a desk for eight hours, commuting to work, worrying about bosses and reports is not our idea of fun. Lets face it, between worrying about next months bills or an island in Asia, everyone would select the beach.

Its cheap. People thinks that traveling is expensive but its not at all. You can travel quite cheaply by taking low cost airlines, staying in pensions, or with locals who offer you their home, and by using local transportation.

You learn about yourself. Travel helps you figure out what makes you you and what you really like or dislike. Forced to fend for yourself, it is do or die. You have to adapt to your surroundings, meet other people, make your own decisions, and plan your life.

You'll make everyone jealous. Let's face it- everyone wants to travel the world but few people do. Do it and make everyone at home jealous of you, your stories, and your photos. While they work all day, you explore the world.

Traveling is a life changing experience. There's no reason not to go. As you can see, there are plenty of reasons why you should go. All you have to do is get up and go. There's no secret. Just move. You live once.

Dahlia Propagation Compost

The propagating compost may be one of several types, but should be sterile and very porous. Probably from the amateur's point of view it is best to eliminate soil from the compost as it is difficult to sterilise without the aid of rather elaborate apparatus.

It is usually advised that the cuttings should be taken when about 3 to 3 in. in length, and this is probably the ideal length, though the commercial grower usually takes a very much smaller cutting, whilst many amateurs prefer to take an even longer cutting, up to 4 in. long in fact. It is really difficult to say which is best, but, on balance, from the average amateur's point of view the slightly longer cuttings are easier to handle, as these usually produce very strong roots and make good plants much quicker than their smaller brethren, often a very important factor in a small greenhouse with not a great deal of available heat, particularly when a comparatively late start in propagating is made. The longer cuttings are more susceptible to flagging, which delays rooting.

Many commercial growers root in pure sand, but it is not advisable for the amateur to do so as the risk of drying out is too great. Some growers use vermiculite alone, although this to some extent has the same disadvantages as sand in drying out rather quickly; besides this it is not always easy to make the cutting bed down well in this material as it is very light and loose.

One school of thought recommends the use of some soil in the compost, as the plants have available some nutrients as soon as roots are formed, but it is essential that the soil be sterilised if used in this fashion. If this idea appeals a very good mixture can be made from equal parts sterilised loam, peat and sharp silver sand (fine quality bird grit may be used instead of sand), adding a little charcoal and shell to keep the mixture sweet. It is very much a matter of opinion which is the best medium. So many growers get excellent results with diverse materials, including pumice, road sweepings and other comparatively unlikely materials, that it is impossible to be dogmatic.

Personally, as I have said earlier, I prefer to eliminate soil from the compost as it is difficult to sterilise, and consider that the peat, sand and vermiculite compost is the best; it is as well to experiment to find out which suits one's circumstances best.

If no root is present there seems to be little advantage, in fact in some cases these cuttings take longer to root and the number of cuttings produced is greatly reduced, because many of the secondary eyes are destroyed or removed. It may be considered worth while if not too many plants are required.

He is forced risk it all, and make sure that gang leader drake is able to safely move illegal drugs across the border.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK: This feature film tells a story about Dr. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton), who is now, due to a military accident, has become the Incredible Hulk. This film tells of the marvel comic character the green Hulk. Edward Norton, Tim Roth, William hurt, all have roles in this film. Louis Leterrier directs this film. The film style is sci-fi/action thriller.

DECEPTION: Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan Mcgregor) has an unusual meeting with charismatic corporate lawyer Wyatt Bose. This a meeting that changes his life forever. He is introduced to "The List", which offers a steamy sexual pleasures. Sadly, he also finds himself in a scene full of deceit, underhandedness and death.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH: Trying to find his brother, professor Trevor Anderson explores caves in Iceland that leads him to the center of the earth. This is a newer edition of the 1959 film, which was about the classic work by celebrated writer Jules Verne. Starring Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutchinson.

THE HAPPENING: Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberb), along with his wife and some friends are escaping Philadelphia by train. Their city has been thrown into chaos. People have been afflicted by some strange illness, and are committing suicide. Can mankind find an answer, or is this the end of man?

IRON MAN: Super stud, engineering expert, Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) is attacked and taken by Afghan insurgents. They demand him to build missiles for the insurgent group. He suffered a bad injury when his convoy was attacked, and has shrapnel stuck in his chest. To live through this life threatening wound, and escape his captors, he creates a suit made of armor, which makes him virtually invincible. Iron Man, a new super hero has arrived.

SPEED RACER: A cartoon from the 90's evolves. Much like The Flinstones, Speed Racer turns a cartoon to a movie with an actual cast. Born into the family business, Speed Racer is a young man who loves racing. His goal is to win The Crucible, one of the biggest rally races that his older brother lost his live in. With odds against him, and everything at risk, he surprisingly teams up with his former adversary Racer X, to attempt to take the title, and save the family business.

Great racehorses - Mill Reef

Mill Reef stood apart as an exceptional thoroughbred, counting the Derby and the Prix de lArc de Triomphe amongst his victories in an illustrious horse racing career that was ended prematurely by injury after registering a record six successive Group One wins.

Bred and owned by Paul Mellon, in 1970 Mill Reef was sent to Kingsclere in England to be trained by the young trainer Ian Balding. Although he had an American pedigree, being by Never Bend out of the Princequillo mare Milan Mill (and hence bred on the potent Nasrullah- Princequillo nick that also gave us Secretariat and Seattle Slew), Mill Reef was judged to be a little too long in the pastern to race effectively on dirt in America.

A natural talent, Mill Reef showed his class on the gallops and he duly won on his racecourse debut in the Salisbury Stakes, a race in which Balding had had success before. Ridden by his regular jockey Geoff Lewis, Mill Reef romped home to win by an unextended four lengths.

At Royal Ascot, Mill Reef duly delivered in the Coventry Stakes, making all and stretching clear to an eight length win. He was never put under pressure by his jockey, yet his time was only a fraction outside the track record.

A trip to Deauville for the Prix Robert Papin was next on the agenda, but a wide draw and a rough journey saw Mill Reef beaten. He soon bounced back and the Gimcrack Stakes at Yorks Ebor meeting in August was selected as his next target. Heavy ovenight rain saw the ground come up heavy, and trainer and jockey were reluctant to run, but were overruled by Mellon, who had come to see Mill Reef in action for the first time.

Mill Reef proved his owner right, quickening clear in the final two furlongs to win by ten lengths in one of the most memorable performances of his career. His glorious fluid action saw him forge further and further clear of his rivals, who included the subsequent champion sprinter Green God and Classic winner Kings Company.

A narrow victory in the Imperial Stakes at Kempton followed, before a busy juvenile season concluded with a step up to six furlongs in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. Different tactics were employed here, with Mill Reef settling behind the leaders before quickening sharply out of the dip to win going away by four lengths.

A Classic campaign beckoned at three, where Mill Reef would have to take on two other remarkable members of the crop of 1968 " My Swallow and Brigadier Gerard. The three lined up in an eagerly anticipated 2000 Guineas at Newmarket with Mill Reef sent off favourite after a comfortable warm-up win in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury, ahead of My Swallow, who had been equally impressive in his trail at Kempton, and Brigadier Gerard who had sparkled on the gallops at West Ilsey.

In the event the brilliant miler Brigadier Gerard made full use of his finishing speed, scorching clear on the rail to beat Mill Reef, who had raced with My Swallow in the centre of the track, by three lengths.

Of the three Guineas principals, Mill Reef was the only one with a Derby entry. Balding adopted the practice of Vincent OBrien with US-bred horses of giving him a gallop over a mile and a quarter10 days before the race, leaving the question of Mill Reefs stamina to be answered on Derby day itself. In the race, Mill Reef showed he was a middle distance horse par excellence, turning in in fourth place and quickening clear to beat Linden Tree and the subsequent Irish Derby winner Irish Ball.

Ian Balding decided to bypass the Irish Derby in favour of the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown as a prep for the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, races in which Mill Reef would take on his elders for the first time.

In the Eclipse Mill Reef demonstrated the superiority of the Classic generation with a dominant victory over the four-year-old French raider Caro. The pair went well clear of their rival, but Mill Reef found the most under pressure, quickening up the Esher hill to win by four lengths in a course record time.

Mill Reef went on to win in the King George later that month with an even more dominant display, scorching up the short Ascot straight to win by six lengths and prompting jockey Geoff Lewis to say: Daylight was second at Ascot.

Mill Reefs connections decided to bypass the St Leger on Town Moor in September in favour of a run in the Prix de lArc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October, a race that had not fallen to an English-trained horse for 23 years. Balding remembers the preparation for this race as his greatest challenge, as Mill Reef had been campaigned hard since the Greenham Stakes in April. In the race, Mill Reef settled in fifth spot under Geoff Lewis. In the straight the leaders were soon beaten, and Mill Reef darted through a gap on the rail, quickening remorselessly clear to win by three lengths, setting yet another new track record in the process.

At the end of his three-year-old season Mill Reef and Brigadier Gerard were both qiven equal top rating by both the official handicapper and by Timeform. Unfortunately, the two rivals were destined never to meet again.

Mill Reef made his four-year-old debut in the Prix Ganay, where he utterly spreadeagled his rivals, skipping clear in the straight to a 10 length victory. The Coronation Cup at Epsom came next, and although Mill Reef won he failed to quicken in his usual style and had to dig deep to hold on by a neck from Homeric.

A virus was later identified as the cause of the poor run, and the Coronation Cup was to prove his last race " though his record of six successive Group One wins was to stand until Rock Of Gibraltar won seven in 2001-2002. Two setbacks in training saw a planned return at York abandoned. Brigadier Gerard, who had won the Eclipse in Mill Reefs absence, suffered his only defeat that day, beaten by Roberto.

At the end of August, disaster struck when Mill Reef broke his near foreleg in a routine canter whilst being prepared for the Arc. Fortunately he was saved, proving a model patient and going on have a successful career at stud. He proved a successful sire, and in 1978 his sons won two Classics, with Shirley Heights winning the Derby and Acamas the Prix du Jockey Club. Mill Reef also sired the 1987 Derby winner Reference Point, the 1981 Derby runner-up and Italian Derby winner Glint Of Gold and the 1000 Guineas winner Fairy Footsteps.

The larger seeds of such shrubs as hazel, cornelian cherry, dogwood, wayfaring tree, medlar, blackthorn, bladdernut, spindle tree, etc., which take longer to germinate, should be sown directly in the autumn or else stratified for the winter and sown the following spring. The advantage of stratifying is that birds and rodents do not have access to the seed bed or frame during the winter. Seeds are stratified by placing with a mixture of two parts sand and one part peat in alternating layers in pots, which are then stored in the cellar or sonic other cool room, with occasional watering to keep the substratum slightly damp. Seeds stratified in earth, peat or sawdust are more likely to rot if overwatered.

As winter draws to an end it is necessary to check the seeds often to see if they are germinating, in which case they must be pricked out into a frame or in pots.

The simplest and easiest method of propagating shrubs is by division. This way, of course, it is possible to produce only one or at most several new individuals, but one great advantage is that they are usually sturdy enough to be planted out in the open immediately. This method can be used to propagate shrubs that continually shoot out new suckers from the base and have a tufted habit of growth.

These include the Japanese quince, mock orange, Oregon grape, heath, snowberry, some species of spiraea, staghorn sumach, dogwood, Japan rose, raspberry, etc. The best time for division of roots is in the spring. The entire shrub is lifted from the soil and divided into several sections with a knife or a sharp spade or else some of the earth is worked away from the side of the shrub and the individual root suckers are separated from the mother plant.

A similar method, known as stooling, is used to increase choice varieties of the hazel or to produce a greater quantity of rootstocks for budding or grafting fruit trees. Shrubs to be increased are cut back close to the ground in early spring so that they will put out as many shoots as possible. As these shoots grow they arc covered with a mound of soil up to about 30 centimetres high. During the summer the shoots put forth new roots and in the autumn the soil is removed and the rooted shoots are cut away from the parent shrub and planted out. This method is sometimes used to propagate certain varieties and species of Philadelphus, Deulzia, Hydrangea, and, Syringa.

This pleasant, slightly hitter flavour is due to the presence of an essential oil containing pinenc, eugenol and einem. Good quality hay leaves should be without stalks and the blades should be pale green, not greyish or dark brown. Laurel is a great herb to grow in your garden. It can be used as a spice to add taste to your food. It is also a decorative herb to grow in the garden.

It is hard to admit, but the luck factor in fishing is quite big. On any given day, a beginner can outfish a seasoned fisherman. In the long run however, the guy with most knowledge and experience always wins.

The most common method of catching a trout is the good old worm on a hook method. It has been used for ages, and still works great today. And why shouldnt it? The fish is the same as it has always been.

Fishing with worms might seem easy, but many still do it wrong. The most common error is that they put too many worms on the hook. When the worms are crowded like this on the hook, they cannot move. And then the point of using worms have disappeared.

If you are using a lure to catch trout, you have to consider a few things before tossing the lure into the water. First; what is the natural prey of the trout in the area? Using a lure that both moves in the same manner and has the same colors is very effective. If you can manage to make the lure move like an injured individual, you will be even more deadly.

As with everything that has do with fishing, the fish will not always take your natural looking lure. Try a lure that is as far from natural as possible. Lures with bright colors, strange movement or other things that make it stand out might just do the trick on a trout that seems slow.

The last advice is quite simply: variation. If one thing doesnt work, try something else.

Avoid Losing Big Hands

Rarely, you will see a player that actually focuses on strategies that mainly deals on how to avoid losing big hands. Though there is a huge list of strategies out there concerning big hands, it would be better if there are more ways and tips on how to stop losing those big hands!

What you will frequently hear from most players "I have no authority over this, it's a game of luck!" what these people do is blame it on some nonsense. The fact is, you can win great hands and put on a chip lead. It would only be pointless if you don't know how to keep it!

More or less, the idea remains the same, notable for players who are not in the chip lead. Here is something very vital, and should be put into consideration, even if you win pots; winning a game or tournament is a silly idea if you keep losing those big hands.

What I'm about to say may confuse you so let me clear this up that what I'm basically talking about is bets, not cards. Continuing on, losses are hassles that hold back your poker career. The solution to this can be summed up in a very simple word, Anticipation. Remember that, simply by anticipating, the number of big hands you lose can be cut down.

The blinds are $1-2 and your opponent Peter, whom is a very tight player, makes it $15 to play, let's say you're on the button and dealt A, J off-suit. As a result, everyone at the table folds, so you call the bet with no fear, since this is the top hand you've seen in awhile. Now, this is your first mistake. As you know, Peter is a very tight player that only makes pre-flop raises with monster hands. Still you called the bet anyway, for the reason that you didn't "anticipate".

The flop hits, and the cards are: A, 9, 2. Peter comes out firing with a $30 bet right away. The question is what do you do? You should put him on AK, AQ, AA, KK, or QQ. These are pretty much the only hands that Peter will make a pre-flop raise with. Now think about what Peter is holding. You place him on hands that beat yours, instead of folding you decided to see another card for $30.

You only thought about the $30 bet and felt pot-committed, Instead of anticipating what Peter was going to bet after the turn card. This is your second mistake. Are you ready to call another big bet after the turn with you're A, J?

Let me tell this, you are simply digging a grave for yourself! Or in other words, you are putting your self in great danger. Sure, you're dealt an excellent hand and flopped the top pair but you stuck it out and expected for a better card. And this is because of you playing only to win. What you should have been doing is to anticipate Peter's behavior and folded your cards prior to the flop. Remember that you have to control to fold that A and J and the top pair when you've anticipated what's coming next.

It's really all in relation to anticipation. Think about what your opponent is going to bet and what you'll be willing to bet. Following that, consider about what will happen following the next cards followed by the ones after that and so on. This will be of great support to you. Finishing the money every time will be no problem! This will direct you to a successful poker career. It is very important to keep in mind that you will only stop these big losses by anticipating different circumstances before they actually come about. And again, it is all about anticipation!

English Medieval Garden

Formal gardens were entirely swept away by the designers of the landscape school and superb parkland layouts created in their place. Far from the mastery of nature, this was an attempt to improve and idealize her and for the next hundred years anything small was considered unworthy.

Gertrude Jekyll planted gardens as well as writing on the subject. She had a strong sense of colour, planting flowers and foliage for particular colour effect, but called attention also to leaf shapes and texture, especially of grey-leaved plants.

In the same way that English medieval gardens remained pale counterparts of the elegant and colourful enclosures found in Europe, the gardens of English royalty and aristocracy developed on the lines of Italian and French Renaissance layouts during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They were, however, less rigorously formal, since the English climate is more conducive to mixed planting. There was also a developing interest in horticulture and a new emphasis on flowers grown for their appearance rather than for culinary and medicinal use.

While Europe was following the fashionable style of the English landscape garden, the quite different Victorian age of gardening writings of Miss Jekyll and William Robinson also coincided with the restoraWon and rehabilitation of long-neglected smaller country houses, farmhouses and cottages and their ideas appealed equally to Mese self-sufficient gardeners. Gertrude Jekyll invented the herbaceous border, planted with roses, shrubs and hardy plants, which has an element of romanticism always associated with the traditional English cottage garden.

An emergent middle class began to move out into the suburbs or even the country, which meant that many more people had gardens of their own and an interest in gardening greatly increased.

During the eighteenth century a revolution took place in England, influenced by Niters, landscape painters and philosophers, all of whom began to react against the artificiality of formal gardens. Literary men such as Addison, Steele and Pope theorized about the curved line and the irregularity of nature, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's idea of the romantic natural garden also tied in with the new movement.

Planning for changing needs

Soil is the medium in which most plants grow. From the gardener's point of view, its most important characteristics are its depth, its texture and its chemical composition. It is essential to find out all you can about the type of soil you have, but the way in which you adapt and improve it is of even greater significance in determining what plants will grow successfully.

The topsoil is the essential layer for plant growth. Its texture and composition generally depend upon the parent rock from which it has very gradually been formed, by the interaction of water, climate and vegetation. Weathering agents such as frost, rain and sun break the rock down over thousands of years to form the basic mineral structure of the soil. Plants grow on the rock debris and myriads of microorganisms work on the dead roots and fallen leaves to decay them, producing the essential organic constituent of the topsoil, known as humus.

In some parts of the world however the soil bears no relation to the rock beneath it because it has been carried to its place by a natural force: the material pushed along by a glacier, for example, forms a type of soil known as boulder clay, and the silt washed down by rivers builds up into alluvial soils.

Digging should be done in small spadefuls at a time otherwise the task can be backbreaking. The roots of persistent weeds, such as couch grass, bindweed, dock, thistles or nettles, should be removed and later burned. When turning over a large area the best method is to dig in trenches, working with the last trench in front of you. Digging to the depth of a spade is usually sufficient but with a very heavy clay soil, or for a large vegetable patch, it may be necessary to turn over the soil to two spade-depths, known as double digging. Apart from the extra effort involved, double digging is also more complicated because it goes down to the second layer, the subsoil. It is important to keep the two layers separate, so the topsoil should be lifted out of the trench and kept aside while the subsoil is broken up and turned over. Add any organic materials at this stage, forking them in well with the subsoil.

For the revitalization of an old garden, many writers suggest removal of the soured topsoil and its replacement with new, but this is both difficult to obtain and expensive. (On the basis of the calculation that it takes 25 mm-1 in-of topsoil a thousand years to develop, it is, of course, cheap.) When buying topsoil, it is important to establish its Source and to be sure that it is `vegetable' topsoil, with organic content, and free of disease and weeds. Beware especially of the roots of weeds such as couch grass. A period of deep cultivation and the addition of plenty of organic material will increase the amount of topsoil already in a garden by encouraging bacteria to work within the top layers of subsoil.

The texture of any type of soil will be improved as the strands of decaying vegetation will break up a sticky clay soil but bind together the large particles of sandy soil. The spaces between the crumbs of soil are sufficient for the retention of moisture but they allow any excess water to drain away. The good soil structure and aeration created assist root development.

What is Chervil?

On the European continent celery is best known as a vegetable, used together with carrot and parsley root in soups, beef dishes, and in raw or cooked salads. It was already being grown for this purpose by gardeners of ancient times.

The flower heads, which have a spicy aroma and pleasant, slightly bitter taste, were originally used in the treatment of various diseases, including jaundice and diseases of the liver as well as migraine. Chamomile tea is a time- honoured tonic with a pleasant taste that aids digestion.

The main constituent of the flower heads is a pale-blue volatile oil similar to that found in German Chamomile (Matricaia chamomilla). Together with the bitter principles it gives the herb the distinctive flavour which is used in making liqueurs. In England the top parts of the plant are used to make herb beer and in the cosmetic industry it is used in the manufacture of shampoos.

Roman chamomile is native to the Mediterranean region but nowadays it grows wild in western Europe, including the British Isles, and is cultivated in Belgium, France and England. The simplest and most reliable method of propagation is by splitting up older clumps in spring, because the flowers are often sterile (do not produce seeds).

Chamomile is commonly grown in the herb garden and because of its low growing havit can be used in place of grass. The double flowered forms (1) in which most of the tubular florets have been replaced by tongue shaped ray florets are generally cultivated nowadays. The commercially available herb usually consists of the flowers of the double form.

The flowers are collected by hand in succession as soon as they are fully open and then dried as rapidly as possible in a well-ventilated place at a temperature not exceeding 30 C (86 F). They must be dried thoroughly to prevent spoiling caused by moisture condensation on overheating.

The Art Of Shadowing And Drawing Still Lifes!...

Still life drawing is a bit of a puzzle to novices who usually mainly spend their time, say focusing, on the main objects. Really, I would say the shadows in the picture, are just as important.

Shadows can make your drawing, so they are vital to your work. To readily achieve these results you will require the following items. An eraser, your pencils, of course, a sheet of cartridge paper and some mounting board.

The board is needed to create a backdrop for your work. It needs to be large enough to take in the shadows for your work. So now you need to set up your backdrop.

So now you have your backdrop, you can put your chosen objects in front of it. Maybe something like bread and cheese with a plate with a knife on it or even a bunch of bananas. You then need a lamp of some sort to cast shadows, for instance from the right side.

What you need to do then to help you, is to create box squares, a bit like graph squares. These need to be about three inches square and drawn on to the backdrop. You then need to do the same thing on the cartridge paper, only very lightly, and the boxes need to be half the size, one and a half inches using a 2B pencil.

Before you start drawing, you need to ascertain how the shadows fall on the screen. They can be seen quite easily as they will be dark.

What do you do now? Sort out your positive and negative objects. The negative being your objects and the positive being your actual shadows. So go for drawing your shadows first.

Shadowing will give your picture more interest. From the far left of your drawing, draw your shadow outlining. Noting how the shadow outline crosses over your boxes. Once you have done this, you can transfer this to your paper using a 2B pencil.

Do not get upset if your representation is slightly different. Just beaver on, filling in your shadow outline. How it can convert the look of your work can be unbelievable!

With all shadow lines filled in, it is possible now to erase some of your boxes that contain your shadows. Then, only with a light touch, you can erase some of these boxes, being careful not to spoil your surface as you go.

Filling in the dark shadows now is your next step. At this stage you could smudge your picture inadvertently, so I would have my hand on a piece of paper whilst doing this. You may have a few white gaps in between the dark areas, this is alright.

Filling in shadows I would do with a 6B pencil and cross hatch it. If you haven't read about this method in one of my previous articles, this is where you draw a series of lines across one way, followed by lines going down over them. In other words, to fill in, don't just scribble across your paper.

Outline the back objects with a 2B pencil. Slowly complete the outlines of all your objects. Just make sure your pencil is sharp. Now it is possible to rub out your boxes with objects inside. What you are left with, is both positive and negative shapes.

Still using the 2B pencil, on the darker parts of your objects, do some light cross hatching. Do not try to hard, try it on the edges for example.

You can finish your drawing with the 2B pencil with light hatching. You do not want to overdo it and get mixed up with your shadowed work. Remember, you need lighter tones in your work.

Star Anise Herb

The spice is obtained from an evergreen tree which grows to about 8 m (26 ft) high and is native to southeastern China. It is a very ancient tree belonging to a primitive family. In China, where it was known long before the Christian era, it was one of the most popular of spices along with cinnamon.

Hyssop is native to the Mediterranean region and central Asia and was introduced to central Europe in the 10th century by the Benedictine monks. In medieval times it was a popular kitchen herb, its leaves being used in soups, pickled vegetables, meat pts and poultry stuffings.

The relatively large flowers, growing from the leaf axils, are followed by a compound fruit (a follicle), fleshy at first, later becoming woody and forming an attractive star with anise-like fragrance (hence the common name star anise).

Hops are a dioecious plant with sterns which twine in a clockwise direction. Only the female plants are cultivated, however, and if any male plants are found in the vicinity of hop fields they must be destroyed to prevent pollination and the development of fruits which would spoil the crop. Hops are raised in fields where they climb up a system of wires and poles to a height of 10 in (33 ft).

Hyssop is a perennial, branching sub-shrub that turns woody at the base and reaches a height of 50 cm (20 in). Still grown widely for its many uses, it has no special growing requirements but prefers a sunny situation and lime-rich soil.

Star anise is grown not only for its fruits (1) and the spice they yield but also for the lovely reddish wood prized by cabinet makers, joiners and turners. The seeds (2) are sown in nurseries and the young plants grown in plantations or in avenues alongside highways.

Tansy

Cocoa, or more correctly cacao, is a small evergreen tree native to tropical America, probably originally growing in the Orinoco River basin. Cocoa is used to make chocolates. Cocoa can be used as spice in cooking.

Its occurrence in the wild as well as its cultivation is restricted to the inland tropics with their heavy rainfall and rich soil. Over the years growers have bred and developed a great variety of cultivated forms and we no longer know what the original wild trees were like.

The tender young leaves combined with eggs were a popular dish called 'tansy', eaten at Easter to celebrate the end of fasting. This custom has survived to this day in the form of Easter cakes and puddings flavoured with tansy leaves.

Cocoa, as well as the chocolate made from it, are surprisingly enough used to flavour certain meat and fish dishes (mainly octopus). It is used in combination with onion, garlic and tomatoes, principally in Italy and Spain.

The rowan is distributed throughout western and central Europe from the lowlands up to the tree-line.and in northern Europe, even north of the Arctic Circle. It is a small, deciduous, rapidly-growing tree reaching a maximum height of 20 m (65 ft); it is not very long-lived and its wood is of little value. Its one advantage is that it is completely hardy.

Tansy may still occasionally be encountered in gardens, where it is generally grown for decoration. The ornamental form T. vulgare crispum is often cultivated. The yellow, button-like flower-heads arc composed only of tubular flowers; female flowers round the perimeter and bisexual flowers in the centre.

Lovage Herb

Even the smallest herb garden should include at least a few marjoram plants. The one difficulty is that, being a native of the warm Mediterranean region, it is damaged by frost in colder winters and must be sown afresh every spring.

The first European botanist to describe the plant was Mattioli. He named it `mala insana', meaning unhealthy fruit, and for a long time it was considered poisonous. In consequence it was not eaten until the 19th century.

As a plant of the Mediterranean region marjoram was known to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, who used it not only to flavour food but also prized it as a miraculous herb with the power of healing practically all diseases, especially colds and chills.

The rhizomes and roots are used to make commercial soup flavourings. The hollow stem may be cut crosswise into ring-like pieces and candied in the same way as the stem of angelica. All parts of lovage may be used fresh as well as dried, whole, crushed or ground.

Lovage is a large perennial herb up to 2 m (6 ft) high with a fleshy rhizome and long, branching roots. It grows best in moist deep soil. It may be propagated by seeds, but for the herb garden a single offset detached from the parent plant will suffice.

Majorana hortensis is a perennial, bushy plant growing up to 40 cm (16 in) high that flowers from July to September. It requires a rather light, limy soil, rich in nutrients and moisture. It is grown throughout the whole of Europe as well as in north Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt). The seeds should be sown in boxes in early spring and the young seedlings moved outdoors to their permanent position when all danger of frost is past. Marjoram may be harvested and used in cooking as spice.
